Position Description

Hostess - Part Time (Independent Living)

Assist in overseeing the daily functions of the dietary servers and to ensure superior service is being provided to our residents and customers

Essential Functions:
1. Must be able to take direction from supervisors and work as a team with entire staff to provide excellent service to residents.
2. The Hostess on duty is in charge of dietary operations in the absence of a supervisor or manager.
3. Responsible for directing and training all servers to assure good service to all residents. Documents training on checklists. Sets a good example for all servers, demonstrates the best service.
4. Assists in the preparation of server schedules as assigned and covers for shortages.
5. Assigns server tables, sections on schedule or daily as appropriate.
6. Maintains seating chart for residents and updates as needed.
7. Opens Dining Room including unlocking and starting all designated areas and equipment including:
- juice machine
- coffee
- ice tea
- checks table linens and changes when soiled or spotted each meal
- assures all places set for residents before meal times with clean and unspotted silverware, china cups/saucers, ice water, napkins,
- tables must be complete with all condiments before meal times: sugar, sweetner, salt sub, salt, pepper, butter, jelly B-only, creamer, syrup if needed.
8. Asks every resident at each meal, “Would you like anything else?” Refills beverages, as needed.
9. Interact with guests in the Dining Room to ensure a positive dining experience.
10. Must be able to accurately and properly serve food to residents following menus, diets, with proper etiquette and formal serving techniques.
11. This is the resident’s home; make them feel welcome and appreciated. Always introduce yourself to residents that are new or to whose name you do not know. Please be polite, smile, saying “please”, “thank you”, “you’re welcome” and other courtesies, while interacting with residents. Never argue with a resident, get the supervisor if you need assistance.

12. Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) will be followed as the approved food borne illness, infection control and sanitation guidelines throughout food production and cleaning processes including but not limited to:
- proper hand washing and use of gloves
- proper cleaning and sanitizing of all serving equipment
- proper documentation, labeling and utilization of leftovers
- proper cooking, cooling, and re-heating foods
- proper use of sanitizing solutions for tables, equipment and thermometers
- reporting all discrepancies and potential problems to supervisor or manager
13. Places food orders timely and picks up efficiently to deliver to residents with minimal waiting time.
14. Must have excellent verbal communication skills, a high degree of service orientation, and a positive attitude.
15. Order of service: - Ice water preset, certain salads preset
- Beverages: milk, juice, and/or coffee/tea
- Openers or appetizers: soup or salad etc.
- Entrée plate with side dishes
- Dessert
16. Always leaves area clean and sanitized and set-up for next shift.
17. Assists with general cleaning as assigned by supervisor which may include: sweeping, mopping, washing pots, washing dishes, equipment cleaning or other cleaning assignments.
18. Complies and upholds other department policies.
19. Communicates nightly activity of dining and employee actions in Managers Log.
20. Other duties as assigned by supervisor and manager.

Special Requirements of the Position

This position requires the ability to read recipes, menus, and assignments accurately. Must be able to stand for long periods of time while working and be able to lift up to 30 pounds, as well as the ability to operate necessary equipment for the job.

Certifications, Licenses Necessary

Previous hostess or dietary leadership experience preferred.
